Fence Prep 101: Eliminate Risk

Before the storm hits, take a few simple steps to minimize risk:

• Remove or secure loose items like patio furniture, garden tools, and toys that could be picked up by the wind.
• Take off post caps if possible. They’re designed to fit snugly but are not glued down—removing them ensures they don’t get lost during the storm.

An unsecured gate can become a battering ram during a hurricane. Avoid costly damage by:

• Securing your gate in either the open or closed position.
  When open, the gate should be firmly braced against the fence line using ties, rope, or a chain. When closed, ensure it is properly locked. In both cases, place sandbags or other heavy, low-to-the-ground items at the base to prevent swinging in the event that the brace or lock fails due to strong winds.
• Preventing swinging motion keeps your gate posts and hinges from sustaining unnecessary stress or bending under pressure.

Access Control Systems: Safe Shut-Down

Automated gates need extra attention before a storm. Here’s how to prep:

1. Switch the gate operator to manual mode.

2. Move the gate to the fully open position.

3. Turn off all power and switches to the system.

4. Secure the gate using any available method (chains, ties, sandbags).

This helps avoid electrical issues, motor damage, or realignment problems after the storm.
